Skoda Citigo

Škoda is continuing its growth offensive by introducing its seventh model line. Citigo is the name of Škoda's new small vehicle. The brand's new model will make its debut in its domestic market, the Czech Republic, before the end of this year, with other European countries following at the beginning of summer 2012. With this 3.56-metre-long vehicle, the Czech-based car maker is extending its product portfolio and entering the small vehicle segment (A00). Offering maximum utilisation of space and four seats for passengers, the Škoda Citigo will be launched as a three-door, with a five-door version to come in 2012.

"The Citigo is one of the pillars of our growth strategy. It paves the way for tremendous opportunities in a new segment," said Škoda Board Chairman Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland. "The Citigo is literally a 'Simply Clever' car. Despite its small size, it offers ample interior space; it is agile while frugal. Put simply: it's an attractive choice offering many clever ideas. The car offers all of Škoda's values in a compact package and fits perfectly with our aims."

With the Citigo, Škoda is targeting a new customer segment. "The demand for small cars with low fuel consumption, at a favourable price and with reasonable operating costs, is growing," continues Prof. Vahland. "Škoda's new small vehicle is a reaction to this trend. We are entering new ground and the Škoda Citigo will attract prospects mainly in our European markets."

The design of Škoda's new city car includes many elements typical of all its vehicles. The designers managed to give the car a distinct look that declares at first glance: this is the new Škoda. The finned grille set in a chrome-plated frame and precisely shaped headlamps give the car the typical Škoda look. The designers have done a fantastic job on the rest of the car's body - 3.56 metres long, 1.65 metres wide and 1.48 metres high, the Škoda Citigo is one of the smallest vehicles in its segment.

The key target groups are young drivers, young families with young children looking to get themselves a second or even third car, and also 'best agers', i.e. customers who are rather cost-sensitive and have a rational approach to cars on one hand but high demands for quality, design and safety on the other. The Škoda Citigo is a perfect mix of these properties. Depending on market demands, up to four trim options will be available: Easy, Active, Ambition and Elegance.

In line with its motto 'City Clever', the Škoda Citigo is an ideal car in and out of the city. It offers surprisingly generous interior space, a thing that is not taken for granted in the small vehicle segment, but is typical for Škoda models. The car's long wheel base - 2.42 metres - provides enough comfort for four passengers even on long trips. The volume of the luggage compartment is 251 litres and can be extended to 951 litres by folding down the rear seats.

The Škoda Citigo's interior offers space, quality and precision, thanks to the clear and transparent arrangement of all elements as well as the two-colour dashboard in higher trim levels. The front headrests are integrated into the seats, as well as a number of other smart solutions, make the new Citigo a 'simply clever vehicle' à la Škoda. The interior design includes numerous storage compartments, cup holders and multimedia systems, as well as storage pockets on the sides of the front seats. In addition, a special handbag hook integrated in to the glovebox opening mechanism, and a photograph holder on the central console, are two clever interior elements. In the luggage compartment a pop-out storage rack can be locked in its top position, and a set of nets prevents loose objects from sliding around.

The vehicle boasts a number of solutions to provide overall comfort. In the three-door version, the 'Easy Entry' system allows easy access to the rear seats. The front passenger's seat can be moved and folded forward to ensure easy access to the rear seats.

The Škoda Citigo places great emphasis on safety. For the first time in a Škoda vehicle, the designers have used a Head-Thorax side airbag to protect the heads of both the driver and the front seat passenger. Along with a number of other items, this system is part of a safety package that is impressive for this segment. In addition, active safety is enhanced by the 'City Safe Drive', a new brake assistance system based on a laser sensor that is activated automatically at speeds below 30 km/h to identify a danger of collision. Depending on the speed and the traffic situation, this automatic braking solution may completely prevent a collision or at least reduce its seriousness. The risk of bumping into the car ahead is thus reduced significantly in city traffic. Along with the Volkswagen up!, the Škoda Citigo is currently the only car in the small vehicle segment to offer the emergency braking functionality.

Two new, three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engines will be available after the Škoda Citigo's launch (44 kW/60 HP and 55 kW/75 HP). The engines and the transmission have been designed to provide optimum economy in cities and their surroundings. Reaching the operating temperature even on short distances, the engines are highly economical. The highly economical Green tec version offers an average consumption of 4.2 l/100km and 4.3 l/100km respectively; with emissions of 97 g and 99 g CO2/km respectively. The fuel consumption and emission levels are indeed low - 4.5 l/100 km and 105 g CO2/km with the 44 kW engine and 4.7 l/100 km and 108 g CO2/km with the 55 kW unit.

Despite their low volumes, the engines reach high torque at low noise levels. The 1.0 MPI engine is used as the platform for alternative-fuel units, such as CNG (Compressed Natural Gas). CO2 output of this version will be from 79 g/km. Besides the manual transmission that is available from launch, Škoda will offer a five-speed automatic transmission in 2012 as an alternative to make this new small vehicle even more comfortable.

Skoda Yeti 4x4

People have never tired of talking about that mythical creature who, with his white fur coat and sharp teeth, lives high up in icy mountains. Although they have never met him, people still speak with great conviction of their encounter with that peaceful inhabitant of the dizzying heights, who is said to have shown many a lost soul the route from the regions of eternal ice to the safety of the valley below. Škoda Auto is celebrating a new member of our model range, which has been given the name of that helpful snowman: The Škoda Yeti is launched. The choice of name truly has a deeper significance. The Škoda Yeti is strong, geared to move under difficult conditions and help its passengers along where others give up. But it has the edge on the original Yeti: Unlike him, it is also happy in warmer areas, finding its way not just in difficult terrain and off road, but with equal confidence and assurance on the road.

These were precisely the aims its designers had in mind during Škoda Yeti's development: The fifth model in the Škoda range would combine these virtues, which have so far been realised by cars in completely different segments, but not found together in one vehicle. That is, the handling and driving comfort of conventional mid-range vehicles, combined with brilliant off-road capabilities. That such a vehicle should also provide above-average space, high carrying capacity and a powerful towing capability has raised the stakes considerably.

The result marks a new chapter in the extremely diverse history of Škoda. Although in the past there were a number of off-road vehicles in the long-established Škoda brand, they never even remotely met the high demands of uncompromised suitability for driving on normal, public roads as well as off-road that Škoda Yeti does.

The first notable Škoda off-roader was a prototype of the Škoda Superb 3000 - Kfz 15 (type 956). From 1942 to 1943, it was built as a saloon with a 3.1 litre, in-line, six cylinder engine and four wheel drive. The type 973 off-road vehicle was produced from 1952 to 1956 and left its mark thanks to its off-road suitability, a wading depth of 600 millimetres, a climbing capability of 85 per cent and excellent handling on the road.

Yeti takes Škoda's experience of more than 100 years of car development, concentrating and honing it in a comfortable and powerful vehicle, setting new standards in the compact SUV segment. Škoda Yeti comes to market with five wide-opening doors, making access to the passenger compartment and luggage storing easy. In addition, permanent, intelligent, power-distributing four-wheel drive and ground clearance of 180 millimetres makes Škoda Yeti suitable for off-roading.

Škoda Yeti's overall length of 4,223 millimetres allows drivers to fit into even those parking spaces that are far from generous, while its width of 1,793 millimetres guarantees that the doors can be opened wide in tight spots. And if the terrain becomes rough and more challenging, the slim stature of the Škoda Yeti always finds a gap to get through. Dimensions are a height of 1,691 millimetres, unladen weight with driver of 1,520 kilograms (1.8 TSI 4x4) and a load of at least 545 kilograms, with flexible boot volume of 416 litres to 1,760 litres. A maximum trailer weight of 1,800 kilograms makes Škoda Yeti a safe and hardworking towing vehicle.

In the compact SUV segment, the Škoda Yeti encounters seasoned competitors, such as the Kia Sportage, the Hyundai Tucson, the Nissan Qashqai and Suzuki Grand Vitara. Škoda Yeti claims leadership in this very popular, but densely populated, class. Apart from its excellent off-road properties and handling characteristics in town, on country roads and motorways - which in no way lag behind those of the compact sector - the new Škoda possesses the youngest engine range in the segment. This ensures maximum fuel economy and the lowest possible emissions.

Škoda Yeti's developers believe the SUV class can only achieve lasting success with an environmentally sound and affordable engine strategy. Therefore, Škoda Yeti's engine range is based on Škoda's downsizing strategy, reducing capacity while at the same increasing performance, thanks to highly sophisticated forced induction. High torque at low engine speeds results from this innovative power unit development.

At the same time, consumption is lowered, easing the strain on Škoda Yeti drivers' wallets, and engine emissions drop, making a significant contribution to the reduction of CO2, NOX and HC. Škoda Yeti wants to be at home in nature and, therefore, not endanger it. For motorists who may not want permanent four-wheel drive, Škoda Auto also offers Yeti in front-wheel drive versions. The generous ground clearance of the new compact SUV still ensures better and safer progress on poor, rutted tracks.

ŠKODA YETI SHOWS WHAT IT IS CAPABLE OF: THE DESIGN

Škoda Yeti wants to show what it is capable of. Its typical off-road design features mark it out as a self-confident and assured companion in everyday life as well as for special tasks. But the fifth Škoda model line nevertheless bears attributes typical of the brand and gives the new compact SUV a clear family identity, which was already apparent in the design study shown in 2005. Above all, this means the evocative rib-shaped grille with the distinct chrome surround and the Škoda logo centred above.

From the grille, feature lines run up the bonnet; loosening up the surface and finding their visual counterpart in the interior centre console. Large headlamps, fitted far up, provide Škoda Yeti with character, lending the front end a friendly look.

The side view is dominated by clear and serene lines, while the distinctly projecting wheel arches and wings confer on the compact SUV a unique character and the lower body protective panels are classic hallmarks of a vehicle with off-road capability. The black C pillars and roof rails as standard round off the robust shape.

The rear design is just as unfussy. The rear lights are C-shaped and the smooth, vertical tailgate opens easily and far upwards, so even tall drivers have no problems standing underneath it when it is raised. The tailgate window appears to wrap around the body encouraging the impression of a continuous window surface to the B pillar. This is a strong reminder of the visor optics that have become the key feature of the Škoda compact class. At the front and rear, underbody protection strips signal Škoda Yeti's off-road suitability, while front fog lamps enhance the front view.

The functional design of the 4,223 mm long and 1,793 mm wide body emanates lightness. Although the side view, with its prominent wings, 17" alloy wheels and 180 mm ground clearance give Škoda Yeti a robust look, it by no means appears cumbersome. The visual impression is confirmed by a look at the data. The minimum weight of the Škoda Yeti 1.8 TSI 4x4 with driver is 1,520 kilograms. The 103 kW (140 bhp) diesel-powered variant adds only 25 kg.

VERSATILE AND ATTRACTIVE: THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT

Intelligent packaging (the configuration of the passenger compartment and the arrangement of the individual units or components) has given Škoda Yeti an overall height of 1,691 mm and a wheelbase of 2,578 mm, resulting in very generous passenger space. These are ideal conditions for comfortable travelling. The high-quality atmosphere is also amplified by an excellent choice of materials. Easy-to-handle switches and buttons, covers and trim, which flatter the senses at every touch, are only some of the attributes which secure Škoda Yeti a lead in its class. Shapes and colours have been carefully matched with each other and the controls possess the typical Škoda design - the compact SUV reveals straight away to which clan it belongs.

The front seats have a long, supportive base good side support for effortless driving. The higher equipment versions include driver's lumbar support and electric seat adjustment. The steering is height- and reach-adjustable, so however tall or small Škoda Yeti drivers are, everyone can find a comfortable and, above all, safe place at the controls. The increased seat height provides increased visibility and yet still makes getting in and out very easy.

Rear seat passengers sit another two centimetres higher than their front seat companions. This creates a "platform effect": as in the cinema, you have an excellent view from the rear seats over the heads of driver and front passenger. Rear seat flexibility and comfort is increased by the VarioFlex seat concept. Thanks to the rear seat system, Škoda Yeti achieves interior variability so far unmatched in the compact SUV category. The three separate rear seats can be individually folded or removed, the outer seats can be moved lengthways and - with the middle seat removed - also sideways by 80 millimetres. This converts Škoda Yeti from a five to a four seater, but increases the rear seat room to executive class.

Thanks to this variable interior concept, Škoda Yeti can tackle the most demanding transport tasks. With the rear seats removed, its boot holds up to 1,760 litres of luggage. Standard equipment includes, among other things, a luggage cover, load lashing rings and nets to secure luggage - all a matter of course for Škoda cars. For the equipment level Active, with breakdown set the net programme is available as an option. In addition, there are a number of smart solutions which simply but effectively boost everyday comfort and safety. For instance, the fastening system in the boot with its moveable hooks saves time when loading and prevents luggage from moving around during the journey.

HIGHLY SOPHISTICATED, FRUGAL AND POWERFUL. TWO PETROL ENGINES AND THREE DIESEL

Škoda Yeti's engine range includes five four-cylinder units with a performance spectrum from 77 kW to 125 kW (105 bhp to 170 bhp). It includes two petrol and three diesel units, which all meet the EU5 requirements.

The basic version is the 1.2 litre TSI petrol engine, which is used for the first time in a Škoda. This completely new power unit delivers 77 kW (105 PS) and provides its maximum torque of 175 Nm between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm. Customers can choose between the manual six-speed gearbox or the innovative seven-speed DSG.

The second petrol engine in the Škoda Yeti range is the muscular 1.8 TSI four cylinder with 118 kW (160 bhp). It reaches its torque peak of 250 Nm at very low engine speeds. The greatest pulling power is supplied between 1,500 and 4,500 rpm. Fuel consumption of this version, which is combined with permanent four-wheel drive, averages 8.0 litres per 100 kilometres (189 g/km CO2 emissions). This reduced consumption is due to measures such as a two-stage oil pump which, up to 3,500 rpm, works with a pressure of 1.8 bar and above that, if more oil is needed for lubrication, with 3.3 bar. An additional, second lambda sensor means improved exhaust quality, as the injection sequences and quantities can be controlled more precisely. Crankcase bearings, piston rings and further moveable engine components have been modified to reduce friction to optimum levels.

Also new for Škoda Yeti is the 2.0 TDI diesel range, available in three performance levels, all with direct common-rail injection and diesel particulate filter as standard. The basic version is the 81 kW (110 bhp) engine followed by 103 kW (140 bhp) unit. Maximum torque of 250 Nm and 320 Nm, respectively, is provided from 1,500 - 2,500 rpm and 1,750-2,500 rpm. Combined consumption for the 103 kW (140 bhp) version - with permanent four-wheel drive as standard - is 6.1 litres diesel per 100 kilometres, which means a CO2 emission of 159 g/km.

The top power unit of the diesel trio is the 125 kW (170 bhp) four cylinder with its burly torque of 350 Nm, reached between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. Combined consumption over 100 kilometres is just 6.1 litres (159 g/km CO2). Exhaust gas recirculation, which - depending on revolutions and engine load - returns up to 60 per cent of the burnt mixture to the intake air, and a catalytic converter guarantee low exhaust gas values. On all four-wheel drive engine versions, the six-speed manual gearbox is supplied, with only the 2.0 TDI CR DPF/81 kW paired with a five-speed gearbox.

Petrol engines:

    * 1.2 TSI 77 kW/105 bhp (front-wheel drive) - 6-speed manual gearbox / 7-speed DSG
    * 1.8 TSI 118 kW/160 bhp (4x4) - 6-speed manual gearbox

Diesel engines:

    * 2.0 TDI CR DPF 81 kW/110 bhp (front-wheel drive) - 5-speed manual gearbox
    * 2.0 TDI CR DPF 81 kW/110 bhp (4x4) - 6-speed manual gearbox
    * 2.0 TDI CR DPF 103 kW/140 bhp (4x4) - 6-speed manual gearbox
    * 2.0 TDI CR DPF 125 kW/170 bhp (4x4) - 6-speed manual gearbox

FUN TO DRIVE AND DYNAMIC: RUNNING GEAR

The suspension set-up guarantees that Škoda Yeti is dynamic and fun to drive. Yeti is characterised by very agile handling with high safety reserves. An elaborate front axle design and a light-weight rear axle with good track stability make driver and passengers feel safe and provide outstanding ride comfort.

Yeti's running gear uses the Group module, which is also found in the Škoda Octavia and the Octavia Scout. The front suspension is McPherson strut, with wishbones. The multi-link rear axle has been modified compared with that of the Octavia. Its track is 30 mm wider and, in connection with a 23 mm diameter torsion stabiliser, clearly reduces body sway in cornering. This configuration is identical on both front-wheel drive and permanent four-wheel drive versions. The rear axle is mounted on a subframe, connected via four flexible mountings to the body, which damps acoustic transmissions and vibrations. Škoda Yeti's fuel tank holds 60 litres of fuel, allows a significant travelling range.

The basic Škoda Yeti runs on 16 inch wheels and 215/60 R16 tyres, providing perfect off-road running and good suspension comfort. Higher equipment levels have 17 inch alloy wheels and 225/50 R17 tyres as standard. Tyre dimensions were chosen to provide the highest possible ride comfort - good off-road traction as well as very good handling on normal roads. Škoda Yeti's ground clearance is equal to that of many large SUVs, thus contributing to excellent off-road capability.

ŠKODA YETI - AT HOME ON AND OFF-ROAD

Thanks to ground clearance of 180mm and a four-wheel drive system that incorporates a fourth-generation Haldex clutch, Škoda Yeti ideal for those who want to venture off the beaten track.

Škoda Yeti's four-wheel drive system is based on the same technology introduced in the Octavia Estate 4x4 and the Superb 4x4 earlier this year. The electro-hydraulically controlled Haldex multi-disc clutch is located in the same housing on the rear axle as the final drive and the rear axle differential.

On dry roads, 96% of the engine's torque is delivered to the front wheels. However, if Škoda Yeti's electronic control unit and its army of sensors detects a difference in speed between the front and rear axles, the Haldex clutch can divert up to 90% of the torque to the rear axle. Thanks to the fitment of a limited slip differential on the rear axle, drive is also distributed evenly from side to side, ensuring excellent grip and stability on all roads at all times.

The system relies on a network of sensors to deliver data to the central control unit. These devices constantly analyse information coming from the engine control unit (which contains data relating to revs and throttle pedal position), the ABS and ESP systems (which also capture information on wheel speed, brake light switch and acceleration forces), and also the steering wheel turning sensor.

The Škoda Yeti's four-wheel drive system works in conjunction with both the ABS and ESP systems to ensure that safety and stability is maintained at all times. When the ESP system is engaged, control of the Haldex clutch is taken over by ABS/ESP control unit. When the ABS system is called into action, the Haldex clutch is decoupled.

To make the most of Škoda Yeti's four-wheel drive system, Škoda has added an off-road mode, which makes driving on loose surfaces easier and more secure. Press the dashboard-mounted off-road button and the ABS, TCS and EDL systems switch to a special off-road setting. Once engaged, the accelerator responds more sensitively when pulling away on loose surfaces, while the operating parameters for the pulling-away assistant and hill start assistant are widened.

The hill start assistant also helps out when descending steep slopes. Through gentle, automatic application of the brakes, the system maintains a constant speed, allowing the driver to concentrate fully on steering Škoda Yeti down the slope.

SAFE AND SECURE, WHEREVER YOU DARE TO DRIVE

Safety has been a key consideration throughout Škoda Yeti's design and development. Despite its comparatively low kerb weight, Yeti has been engineered to protect both its occupants and pedestrians.

The design of the body has been geared to meet the requirements of EuroNCAP crash tests, along with the many different safety standards in non-European markets. Thanks to the use of high strength steel which channels impact energy away from critical areas in a controlled manner, Škoda Yeti's passenger cell offers a strong survival space for passengers in the event of an accident.

Škoda Yeti also gives vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, high levels of protection in a collision. The front of the car has been designed to incorporate a safety zone between the bonnet and the hard components of the engine. This is designed to reduce the seriousness of the injuries in a head or thorax impact.

All Škoda Yeti models are equipped with ABS with Mechanical Brake Assist (MBA) and the engine torque control (MSR). ESP is included on all 4x4 versions while up to nine airbags (which includes a driver knee airbag and rear side air cushions) protect passengers in the event of an accident.

If any of the airbags are deployed, the fuel and power supply to the engine are automatically cut - reducing the risk of fire - while the central locking system opens the door locks and the interior light is turned on.

Škoda Yeti also provides comprehensive passenger protection in the event of a rear-end collision. Active front head restraints help to prevent whiplash to the driver and front passenger, while the brake lights flash to warn other drivers if an emergency stop is carried out at speeds above 40mph.

Isofix anchorages for child seats are fitted in the rear, and are available as an option for the front passenger seat. If a child seat is fitted to the front seat, the passenger airbag can be switched off. Finally, standard daytime running lights make Škoda Yeti even more visible to other road users.

Should a driver venture off the beaten track, the system records the car's movements and can recall them should a return route be needed.

Park Assist is another option aimed at making urban life a little easier. Based on the award-winning system offered as an option on the Škoda Superb, Yeti's Park Assist feature goes one better by including a control unit that looks after forward movement. As a result, Škoda Yeti can be squeezed automatically into a space just 80cm longer than the car itself - an improvement of 40cm over the Superb.

Climatronic air conditioning with intelligent two-zone control is another feature designed to make life on board a more comfortable experience. It incorporates a sensor that monitors the exterior air quality - relaying data to the central control unit. If the quality of air drops below a certain level, for example in tunnel or when stuck in traffic, the air supply is automatically switched to circulation air until the outside air quality improves.

Skoda Design Concept

Škoda is offering a glimpse of the future by unveiling a Škoda Design Concept at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The economic goals set by the carmaker require a new focus drawing on the inspiration of a tradition stretching back for more than 110 years. The use of modern stylistic elements and the latest technology is a logical step. The Škoda Design Concept gives fleshes out the contours of the growth strategy with clearly defined features, maximum care and attention to detail.

Tradition with vision: evolving towards success

The concept singles out characteristic design elements of the Škoda brand and guides them forwards towards the future. The long wheelbase and short overhangs are a prerequisite for successful automotive architecture as they both allow for above-average interior space and, coupled with the dynamic roof line, lend the car a high degree of visual majesty. The fluent integration of the tailgate underscores the entire car's sophisticated practicality. The high everyday utility value and distinctive interior modular design are traditional brand values which are freshly interpreted in a more modern form here. The grille with its unobtrusively shiny finish symbolizes the brand's aesthetic blueprint, its fine slats resembling taut harp strings.

Sending out a clear signal: a new logo and distinctive lighting elements

The newly arranged and clearly structured logo stands out in the middle of the car as the starting point for all the contours. It intersects the horizontal line of the bonnet, highlighting its special status as a symbol of quality and success.

The Škoda logo is bordered on the sides by four headlights reminiscent of a symbolic four-leaf clover. They endow with the concept with a pleasant yet pragmatic countenance expressing warmth and chemistry. The C-shaped rear lights have become a characteristic of each Škoda vehicle unmistakable both in the daytime and at night. In Škoda Design Concept, this precisely rendered lighting architecture has become the rear section's defining element.

The silhouette of spirit: light and shadow play with balanced window design

The Škoda Design Concept's athletically sleek silhouette emphasizes the starkly defined light and shadow play created by the sharp wedge-shaped line, allowing the balanced proportions to come to the fore. The side profile is equally well rendered. For example, the rear edge of the door is complemented by the bottom front area of the side mirror, delivering an entirely new aesthetic impression.

The concept epitomizes high design value to the finest detail. Above rear bumper, small grooves connecting the rear lights to the licence plate holder; the resulting triangular elements represent precision reminiscent of the cut crystal and lend the car character and individuality.

Generous interior: choice materials and crystal glass

In this concept, the exterior precision is mirrored in the interior. Values typical of the Škoda brand, such as the generous space and sophisticated practicality, have been composed very sensitively in terms of the materials and elegant shapes employed. The lighting creates a pleasant environment, friendly ambience.

The use of crystal glass is a completely new, attractive idea reflecting a special link with Czech culture, art and craftsmanship.

The Škoda Design Concept marks another big step into the future for Škoda. Its forms shapes are dynamic, stimulating the imagination of observers without provoking them, and offering an undistorted view of the outlook for cars made in Mladá Boleslav. It is here in this Czech town that designers and engineers have paved the way for future success. This traditional Czech brand is now best placed to achieve its ambitious goals: economic growth coupled with new design full of potential, while preserving established traditional strengths such as great performance, value and precision.
