The Honda Jazz Hybrid will make its world motor show debut at 2010 the Paris Motor Show, further demonstrating Honda's continuing commitment to petrol-electric hybrid technology.

The launch of the latest addition to the practical Honda Jazz line-up will mark the first time a parallel hybrid vehicle has been available to B-segment consumers. The IMA hybrid motor and control system are shared with the Insight and CR-Z hybrids, taking advantage of the proven reliability of this important technology. With almost two decades of development and 10 years of sales behind it, the Honda IMA system has proven itself to be a flexible and dependable technology, with over half a million vehicles on the road benefitting from its combination of low emissions and fuel economy.

The new model will feature the same engine as the Insight hybrid, the 1.3 litre i-VTEC engine is combined with a CVT gearbox with an electric motor sandwiched between the two to create a parallel hybrid system. Like the Insight and Civic Hybrid models the Honda Jazz Hybrid will be capable of running on the electric motor alone under some medium and low speed conditions.

Much of the Honda Jazz's practicality is derived from its height but despite being taller than the Insight, the Jazz Hybrid manages to maintain fuel consumption and CO2 emissions on comparable levels.

Visually the Honda Jazz Hybrid is distinguished from the current Jazz range with revised headlights, with a blue surround, clear rear lights, new front grille, restyled bumpers and a chrome tailgate garnish. The new hybrid will also be available in a range of existing colours plus a bespoke Lime Green metallic.

Inside the cabin is also given a fresh look with darker single colour dashboard, which contrasts strongly with the blue lighting of the dials and stereo. The new hybrid is also available with leather trim, the first time this has been available on a Jazz model in Europe. The Honda Jazz Hybrid will go on sale in some European markets in the early part of 2011.

- For 2011, the Honda Accord evolves again with sharpened styling inside and out, fuel economy gains and a broader application of popular features. The Honda Accord is designed to deliver a consistently rewarding ownership experience in the areas that matter most to sedan and coupe drivers. -

With the addition of the Honda Jazz Hybrid model, the rest of the Jazz model range has been given some styling and detail changes to enhance its already strong B-segment credentials.

Over 500,000 customers have felt the benefits of the innovative sector crossing Honda Jazz and the latest changes to the range will only enhance the experience. The focus has been on maintaining the key customer benefits of flexibility, practicality and reliability and enhancing fuel economy, emissions, ride comfort and style.

TRANSMISSION
One of the biggest changes is the return of the CVT transmission to the Honda Jazz range with the first European use of a different form of variable transmission. The CVT in the Honda Jazz has been enhanced by fitting a torque converter to the gearbox, giving increased efficiency and improved control at low speeds.

The use of a slope sensor allows the box to decide when the car should gently creep forward and when it should not, helping the driver retain maximum control. The CVT-based transmission proved very popular in the previous generation of the Honda Jazz and its return was prompted by requests from loyal customers who enjoyed its smooth shifting characteristics and ease of driving.

This gearbox is different to the one used in the Honda Jazz Hybrid model, which because of its different requirements does not adopt a torque converter unit.

The CVT gearbox is equipped with paddle shifters on the rear of the steering wheel, giving the driver manual control. When used in "D" mode the paddles can bring the car into a lower ratio, for a "kickdown" effect, with the box returning to automatic shifting afterwards. When the paddles are used in "S" mode they give full manual control over the selection of ratios, for acceleration or engine braking. The manual gearbox remains unchanged, with the five speed unit being ideally matched to the economy and emission requirements of the car.

EXTERIOR DESIGN
Exterior changes have made to the car, both to enhance the appearance of the car and reduce the drag coefficient to improve fuel economy. The front and rear bumpers are the main area where aesthetics and aerodynamics have both influenced the new look of the car. These have been designed to reduce drag as the airflow passes over the Honda Jazz's body and avoid turbulence as it detaches from the rear.

The grille and front lights have also been tweaked to give a fresh face to the 1.2 and 1.4 litre versions of the car. The rear lights have also been changed, incorporating a larger area of red in the lenses and further distinguishing the pure petrol cars from the Honda Jazz Hybrid. Two new colours join the Jazz range for 2011 with a lustrous Deep Sapphire Blue and Ionized Bronze which is a metallic brown colour to compliment the revised lines.

INTERIOR DESIGN
Inside the most noticeable change is the adoption of a darker dashboard material in a single colour, which is combined with a new seat fabric to enhance the ambience of the cabin. Dash lighting is now unified in a single orange colour, which provides a strong contrast with the darker dashboard. Chrome rings now define the air vents, instruments and climate control display (where fitted). For the first time in the European Honda Jazz, leather seats are available as a factory fitted option.

Magic Seats
One of the most distinctive elements of the currentHonda Jazz and a key factor in its popularity is the Magic Seats design acclaimed for its flexibility and multiple seating and cargo-carrying configurations. The new Jazz not surprisingly retains the arrangement but is now even better with the addition of a reclining function. This new feature offers the customer an even greater level of flexibility, increasing comfort and complimenting the excellent leg and headroom for rear seat passengers.

The rear seats of the Honda Jazz fold completely flat, giving a very low boot floor, this is only possible due to the Honda centre tank layout, which is shared with the European Civic. The bases of the seats drop down into the space normally filled with the fuel tank, which is located under the front seats freeing up usable space in the rear. The front seats don't need to be slid forward to give the rear seat sufficient clearance as it is folded down. Instead, even with the front seats in their rearmost position, the 60:40 split rear seats with their retractable headrests can be collapsed in a simple 'one-motion' dive-down action by means of a lever located on the outside shoulder of the seat.

In 'Utility Mode', Honda Jazz offers a perfectly flat load floor, a maximum 1720 mm in length, sufficient to swallow three 26 inch mountain bikes with front wheels still attached, stood upright. The actual surface area equates to two large and two extra-large Samsonite suitcases laid flat; similarly, three golf bags can be laid lengthwise. With the larger rear seat portion alone collapsed, there is sufficient space and length to accommodate a surfboard laid flat; or two 26 inch mountain bikes stood upright. The available load length is even greater in 'Long Mode' where the front passenger seat is slid fully forward and its seatback fully reclined - opening up a 2.4 m long load space. With seats folded the Honda Jazz boot capacity increases to 1320 litres of space when measured to the roof and excluding the underfloor storage.

To return the rear seats to a seating position, you simply lift the assembly back up; the seat bottom remains locked to the seat back and is simply released by pulling up the leg frame and the seat bottom folded down.

This locking seat base action adds further innovation and Honda Jazz's unique offer, since in 'Tall Mode' the seat bases can be left raised and locked against the seat backs, creating a second load area between front and rear seats capable of holding a variety of objects up to 1280 mm in height, such as tall plants, two mountain bikes with their front wheels removed, a folded wheelchair, and all manner of other items. And since the rear doors now open wider, it is even easier to make full use of this feature.

Double-Trunk boot
The same levels of innovation are found in the luggage bay of the new Honda Jazz which still offers a class-leading capacity that betters some B-segment compact MPVs.

Beneath the boot floor lies a secondary storage compartment and on 1.4 models the provision of an emergency tyre repair kit in place of a space-saver spare wheel frees up this space, adding an extra 64 litres to give an exceptional load capacity of 399 litres (VDA) compared to the 380 litres of the previous generation Honda Jazz (9 litres of underfloor storage with space saver wheel).

The practical Double-Trunk boot system is fitted to 1.4-litre Honda Jazz models with tyre repair kit, giving owners greater convenience and perfectly complementing the Magic Seats arrangement.

In 'Regular Mode', the under floor storage area is concealed by a 100 kg-capacity double hinged panel. This panel can be folded against the rear seats in 'Tall Mode' to make use of the full depth of the load space enabling particularly tall objects to be carried.

Alternatively, rather than folding the complete panel against the rear seat backs, its rear half can be raised into a horizontal position, and can be supported by fixtures in the load bay sides, to create a mid-height storage shelf and effectively separating the luggage space into upper and lower sections - the so called 'Upper/lower Mode'. The net contained within the upper panel is perfect for carrying irregularly shaped objects that won't sit flat.

The 230 mm deep under floor space is ideal for storing sports gear or raincoats and umbrellas and once the lid is on, it keeps dirty objects separate from other luggage.

A load lip 605 mm from the ground makes for easy loading and unloading.

Finally, a useful shopping bag hook is located just inside the left hand side of the luggage bay.

CHASSIS REVISIONS
The suspension on the Honda Jazz has revised settings to increase ride comfort and improve handling. To compliment the improved ride comfort, the revised model has been further improved with additional resistance to improve "on-centre" feel giving greater drivability.

ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION
To compliment the launch of the Jazz Hybrid model, the conventionally powered Honda Jazz has also had some small reductions in CO2 values and improved fuel economy. The new CVT gearbox has matched the economy and emissions of the previous i-Shift 1.4-litre model, with a CO2 value below that of the manual model at just 125 g/km. The 1.2-litre engined car, now emits just 123 g/km of CO2 and uses 5.3 l/100km of petrol. The larger 1.4 engine range has emissions starting at 126 g/km with 5.5 l/100km fuel economy on a combined cycle.

Now the discerning customer has the opportunity to enjoy the unique high-performance character of a BMW M car also in the segment of BMW X models: The BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are the first all-wheel-drive models to offer the supreme performance, dynamic driving features, athletic design, and premium quality of a typical BMW M Car.

Both models are powered by a newly developed V8 high-performance engine delivering 408 kW/555 hp at an engine speed range between of 6,000 rpm from an engine capacity of 4,395 cc. The new M TwinPower Turbo engine is indeed the world's first power unit with a common exhaust manifold encompassing both rows of cylinders and featuring Twin Scroll Twin Turbo Technology.

BMW's intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system is naturally geared to the specific power and performance characteristics of the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M, just like Dynamic Performance Control also standard on both models. Interacting with the cars' special M suspension including Adaptive Drive and the newly developed Servotronic power steering, this ensures the driving behaviour so characteristic of a BMW M Car, combining unique driving stability with precisely controlled steering qualities all the way to the highest level of driving dynamics.

The BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M set new standards in this segment of high-performance models in terms of acceleration, lateral dynamics, steering behaviour, stopping power, and efficiency. Both models accelerate to 100 km/h from a standstill in 4.7 seconds and stand out not only through the truly impressive delivery of power by the V8 turbo engine providing maximum torque of 680 Newton-metres or 501 lb-ft in the broad speed range between 1,500 and 5, 650 rpm, but also through the likewise smooth and consistent build-up of lateral forces meeting the highest requirements and the most dynamic level of performance in bends.

The exclusive character of both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M results to a large extent from a level of driving performance never seen before even in this particular segment. Both models offer the ultimate in their segment in every respect, providing performance and dynamic driving reserves quite unique versus the competition and ensuring an experience of unlimited supremacy in everyday traffic.

Design: features typical of BMW M for supreme dynamics and exclusivity.

The truly outstanding potential of both models comes out clearly in their looks and design, their joint DNA borne out by supreme performance on the road presented convincingly by the common design of the front end with its large air intakes.

The engine compartment lid, the front air dam and the headlight graphics carried over from the BMW X6 are identical in both cases. The proportions of the two cars, on the other hand, clearly differ through the variability of the BMW X5 M Sports Activity Vehicle as opposed to the dynamic qualities of the BMW X6 M Sports Activity Coupé.

Both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M feature special gill intakes in the front side panels tailored to each model as well as individually designed 20-inch light-alloy rims.

The signs of distinction so typical of BMW M are likewise presented in individual style at the rear, in both cases confirming the outstanding dynamism of each model: The rear air dam on the BMW X6 M demonstrates particularly powerful presence, while the two dual tailpipes in the exhaust system surrounded in both cases by the rear air dam are again typical of BMW's M philosophy.

Compared with the "regular" BMW X5 and the BMW X6, the share of black plastic surfaces around the lower section of the body is reduced on both new models, giving even greater emphasis to the road going-orientation of the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M. Particularly the body elements fulfilling major functions in terms of aerodynamics and the flow of cooling air are clearly accentuated on both models.

Beyond these common features, both of these all-wheel-drive high-performance sports cars stand out clearly as unique models in their own right: The BMW X5 M clearly boasts its superior power and exclusivity at very first sight, while the BMW X6 M, in its unique design, alludes to fascinating driving dynamics and the car's athletic charisma.

The M TwinPower Turbo: Twin Scroll Twin Turbo Technology with a joint exhaust manifold for both rows of cylinders making its debut in the market.

Power and performance typical of BMW M is delivered by the power unit in both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M by a new design and construction principle: The new M TwinPower Turbo with Twin Scroll Twin Turbo Technology and the exhaust manifold extending over both rows of cylinders patented by BMW offer absolutely extreme response and spontaneity, a linear build-up of engine power, and an unusually consistent torque curve.

The two turbochargers are positioned together with the catalytic converters in the V-section between the two rows of cylinders. The position of the intake and exhaust ducts provided in this way serves to reduce the length of the pipes and manifolds and increase their cross-section, with pressure losses on the exhaust side being significantly minimised in the process.

The joint flow of exhaust gas provided by the common manifold system connecting two cylinders at a time also ensures optimum gas throughput. The separation of exhaust flow is continued until the exhaust gas reaches the turbine wheel, building up ongoing pressure on the two Twin Scroll Turbochargers not impaired by any kind of counter-pressure.

With maximum charge pressure amounting to 1.5 bar, the use of Twin Scroll Twin Turbo Technology with its inter-cylinder exhaust manifold makes unique use of the turbocharging potential.

Immediate, direct response to the gas pedal and truly exceptional pulling force from the engine starting at low speeds and continuing consistently to the highest load level characterise the new M TwinPower Turbo from BMW M GmbH. The truly impressive development of power ensured in this way is accompanied by fascinating engine sound accentuating the fast-revving engine characteristics and the linear build-up of power by a supreme acoustic effect typical of a BMW M Car.

Reflecting the superior power of the engine, the V8 power unit comes with a cooling system developed specifically for the two new models. One special feature in this context is the indirect intercooling effect serving to optimise performance under particularly dynamic driving conditions.

The new M TwinPower Turbo develops its outstanding output and performance with equally outstanding efficiency. In addition to direct ¬High Precision Injection, both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are equipped with a wide range of technologies from BMW ¬EfficientDynamics. Apart from Brake Energy Regeneration, these also include on-demand control of the electrical fuel pump, a detectable a/c compressor, as well as a volume flow-controlled supply of hydraulic fluid to the anti-roll system also operating specifically on demand.

Both models offer average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 13.9 litres/ 100 kilometres, equal to 20.3 mpg imp. Their CO2 rating is 325 grams per kilometre. And last but not least, the engine naturally fulfils all the requirements of the US LEV II standard as well as the EU5 requirements in Europe.

M Sports Automatic with electronic gear selector lever and shift paddles on the steering wheel.

Featured for the first time on a BMW M Model, the six-speed automatic transmission enhances the high-performance character of the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M through its spontaneous gearshift, direct connection to the engine, and the high standard of shift comfort. The new M Sports Automatic is controlled by an electronic gear selector lever on the centre console and offers the driver not only the D Mode, but also an S and M Mode for an even more sporting gearshift.

Aluminium gearshift paddles on the steering wheel exclusive to BMW M allow a manual gearshift significantly shortening gearshift times by the new technology reducing torque in the transmission through the deactivation of individual cylinders.

This significantly enhances the sporting character of the car, the gear in mesh being held in position in the M Mode up to maximum engine speed in order to give the driver optimum control of his vehicle also under the most dynamic driving conditions. In other words, the transmission does not shift up automatically at a certain engine speed in this mode.

A further option in the M Mode is to activate the Launch Control function enabling the driver to accelerate from a standstill with maximum performance: With the driver pressing the gas pedal fully down, M Sports Automatic shifts gears automatically at the ideal point and with optimum wheel spin control. An aluminium oil sump again exclusive to BMW M with a special finned or ribbed structure on the surface guarantees optimum cooling at all times even with an extremely sporting style of motoring.

BMW xDrive and Dynamic Performance Control with a special set-up for optimum dynamics.

The outstanding success of BMW's intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology is based on the fact that the system not only improves traction on rough terrain, but also enhances driving dynamics on the road. Electronically controlled, variable power distribution to the front and rear axle prevents even the slightest tendency to over- or understeer right from the start, before DSC Dynamic Stability Control is even required to cut in.

Dynamic Performance Control presented for the first time in the BMW X6 and now featured also in the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M enhances driving stability in demanding situations. Variable distribution of drive power between the right and left rear wheel significantly improves steering precision and tracking stability at all speeds, with DSC being required to stabilise the vehicle only under high lateral acceleration.

Ultimately this offers the driver an unparalleled standard of dynamic performance, agility and traction re-defining all existing benchmarks in drivetrain and suspension technology.

In the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M the potentials of both systems are again used in that special style of BMW M, with the driver able to activate the M Dynamic Mode (MDM) by means of the DSC button on the centre console. This mode raises the DSC control thresholds for intervention in the brakes and the reduction of engine power and ensures the steering behaviour typical of BMW M by shifting the xDrive control features more to the rear wheels and interacting with Dynamic Performance Control in the process.

As a result, MDM allows maximum speeds in bends and on winding roads with the system cutting in very late when the vehicle reaches the absolute limit. Even under maximum load in the apex of a bend, therefore, the vehicle follows the steering with utmost precision, giving the driver very high speed when leaving the bend in the interest of optimum performance. And last but not least, the DSC-Off Mode may be activated at the touch of a button.

Special M suspension with Adaptive Drive featured as standard.

The suspension developed specifically for the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M with its double-track control arm front axle and Integral IV rear axle offers M-specific elastokinematics thanks to stiffer track control arm mounts and hydraulic tiebar mounts at the front as well as stiffer axle support mounts at the rear.

Both models come as standard with air suspension featuring self-levelling on the rear axle as well as Adaptive Drive with electronically controlled dampers (EDC) and active anti-roll stability. The special version of Adaptive Drive tailored to the requirements of BMW M also serves to lower the entire vehicle by 10 millimetres or 0.39" versus the "regular" BMW X5 and BMW X6 and incor¬porates stiffer carrier springs, modified auxiliary springs, three-way support mounts and damper control with reinforced connection to the body.

The special Servotronic steering developed for the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M provides individual steering assistance geared to the actual road speed of the vehicle. This allows comfortable parking manoeuvres with lower operating forces as well as exact feedback and a high standard of steering precision at higher speeds.

The degree of power assistance is defined by two control maps. Apart from the standard configuration, the driver is able, through the EDC and, respectively, the M Drive button, to call up the Sports Mode activating an uncompromisingly sporting control map with higher control forces for particularly dynamic driving conditions.

Changing from the Normal to the Sports Mode, the system alters not only the Servotronic control map, but also the damper setting, with the connection of the dampers to the body of the vehicle being significantly reinforced in the Sports Mode. In conjunction with anti-roll stability this allows an exceptionally high standard of linear lateral forces in dynamic bends and on fast, winding roads.

The high-performance brake system guarantees supreme stopping power and high resistance to fading under all conditions. The brakes come with four-piston fixed callipers at the front and swing callipers at the rear, combined in each case with inner-vented lightweight brake discs.

The BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are the only vehicles in their segment to come as standard with different-sized tyres front and rear, running in each case on 20-inch light-alloy rims. The choice of 275/40 R 20 tyres at the front and 315/35 R 20 tyres at the rear is a further result of the special set-up characteristic of both models, with the emphasis on rear-wheel power. The choice of this combination of tyre sizes ideal in terms of driving dynamics promotes both the exceptionally good transmission of power to the rear axle and the precise, exactly dosed steering behaviour of both models.

Dynamic performance according to the driver's personal choice and available at the touch of a button: the M Drive button on the steering wheel.

Apart from the DSC Mode and the specific set-up of both the dampers and the steering, the driver is also able to configure the set-up of the drivetrain on the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M according to his personal requirements. Activating the Power Mode which influences both engine and transmission control, the driver has the choice of both the Sports and Efficiency driving programs.

The Sports program allows precise dosage of engine power also under the most dynamic driving conditions specifically through the linear build-up of the power delivered.

The Efficiency program, in turn, shifts up gears at an early point in time not only to significantly reduce fuel consumption under practical driving conditions, but also to allow a relaxed style of motoring using the supreme torque and pulling force of the engine available from low engine speeds. The result, therefore, is an ideal combination of efficient motoring and supreme driving qualities.

In the M Drive menu the driver is able to pre-configure both the Power Mode and the set-up of DSC and EDC, the combination of settings chosen providing the set-up preferred by the driver under all conditions. The driver is even able to save his favourite set-up and subsequently retrieve it at any time simply by pressing the M Drive button on the steering wheel.

The M Drive menu is yet another specific M feature supplementing the vehicle, infotainment, navigation, air conditioning and communication functions already controlled by BMW iDrive. Both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are equipped with the latest generation of iDrive and come as an option with a Head-Up Display again specific to BMW M. Indeed, this function even enables the driver to vary the type and scope of the data projected on to the windscreen in accordance with the M Drive menu.

M-specific cockpit and sophisticated driver assistance systems for even greater supremacy at the wheel.

The philosophy so typical of BMW M naturally continues into the design and configuration of the driver's "workplace": Both of these all-wheel-drive high-performance sports cars come with a special M cockpit with the instrument cluster featuring a variable pre-warning field in the rev counter, specific vehicle function displays, and white display illumination. And both the BMW X5 M as well as the BMW X6 M boast M seats and an M leather steering wheel.

The driver's superior style of motoring is enhanced additionally by innovative driver assistance systems, both models fitted as standard with cruise control incorporating its own brake function. The wide range of optional features, in turn, includes Adaptive Headlights and a High-Beam Assistant.

Supplementing BMW Park Distance Control naturally featured as standard, there is also an optional back-up camera including its own very special Top View function.

The wide range of standard features includes electrical seat adjustment complete with a memory function and seat heating at the front, two-zone automatic air conditioning, extended Merino leather, a HiFi audio system with 12 loudspeakers and 230 Watt amplifier output, M entry trim, an M footrest, interior trim in brushed Aluminium Shadow on both models as well as a BMW Individual instrument panel finished in leather and automatic operation of the tailgate on the BMW X6 M. The optional comfort features available on both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M include BMW's Professional navigation system, four-zone automatic air conditioning, active seat ventilation, full leather upholstery in Merino leather, a panorama glass roof on the BMW X5 M and an electrically operated glass roof on the BMW X6 M as well as the BMW Individual High End audio system.

BMW announced the production version of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid. The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid makes its world premiere at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) and will reach US BMW Centers in fourth-quarter 2009. ActiveHybrid technology provides a glimpse into the future, achieving outstanding driving dynamics with equally impressive efficiency. It melds both of these qualities to offer a truly unique driving experience. The world's first Sports Activity Coupe with full hybrid drive capitalizes on the options offered by combining the combustion engine with electric motors to create a powertrain with new levels dynamic performance and efficiency.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology offers a significant increase in driving dynamics and at the same time reduces fuel consumption by approximately 20 percent versus a comparable vehicle powered by a combustion engine alone. The result is even greater driving pleasure combined with enhanced fuel economy and CO2 management providing the kind of progress to make the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid a genuine BMW in the hybrid market.

The overall drive system featured in the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid consists of a 400 hp twin-turbocharged V8 gasoline engine and two electric synchronous motors delivering 91 hp and 86 hp, respectively. Maximum system output is 480 hp, and peak torque reaches 575 lb-ft.

Precisely controlled interaction of the three power units optimizes the overall efficiency of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid at all speeds, with acceleration from a standstill to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. Top speed of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid is limited electronically to 130 mph, with average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle improved by roughly 20%, and a CO2 emission rating of 231 grams per kilometer. EPA ratings will be available closer to the market introduction.

BMW's first full hybrid model is able to run exclusively on electric power - and that is entirely free of CO2 - up to a speed of 37 mph (60 km/h), with the combustion engine being activated automatically whenever required.

These performance figures are made possible by utilizing a two-mode active transmission. The ideal combination of the two power modes can be controlled for enhanced efficiency and dynamic performance in any driving condition. With the two electric motors, three planetary gearsets and four multi-plate clutches, drive power is transmitted through a 7-speed automatic transmission. As would be expected in a BMW, the driver can operate the transmission manually. BMW's lauded xDrive all-wheel-drive system distributes the power between the front and rear axles.

The electric motors receive their energy from an NiMH high-performance battery pack positioned beneath the floor of the luggage compartment. This battery pack also feeds electric power to the vehicle's on-board network. Luggage compartment capacity is therefore the same as on the original BMW X6. On brake application and/or on deceleration, kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy and is stored in the battery pack. To provide this function either one or both of the electric motors act as a generator, feeding electric power generated back into the high-voltage battery.

Unique efficiency ensured by two-mode active transmission.
BMW ActiveHybrid technology has been developed specifically for use in a particularly dynamic vehicle and for a broad range of practical use. The big advantage, therefore, is optimization of drivetrain efficiency in all speed ranges and conditions.

The two-mode active transmission is based on an ECVT (electric continuously variable transmission) operating in two separate modes. One mode is for stop-and-go driving and low speeds, and the second is for driving at higher speeds.

From a stop and at low speeds, only one of the two electric motors is activated. As soon as the driver requires more power or increased speed, the second electric motor automatically starts the combustion engine. The second electric motor then serves as a generator to provide a supply of electric power to the vehicle systems. When driving steadily at a higher speed most of the power required is delivered by the combustion engine in a largely mechanical process. Here again, one of the two electric motors acts as a generator.

The mechanical components, including three planetary gearsets and the two electric motors, combine to provide for seven total effective gears. This configuration manages the power generated by the combustion engine and two electric motors in a way that maximizes driving versatility.

Twin-turbocharged V8 gasoline engine with High Precision Direct Injection.
The combustion engine is the innovative reverse-flow V8 first featured in the BMW X6 xDrive50i. The world's first V8 gasoline engine with two turbochargers in the V-section between the two rows of cylinders develops power throughout the entire engine speed range. The spontaneous and direct response of this engine results from its compact configuration, which allows the shortest exhaust manifolds.

Displacing 4.4 liters, this outstanding engine delivers its maximum output of 400 hp between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm. Peak torque of 450 lb-ft is maintained from 1,750 to 4,500 rpm, with High Precision Direct Injection ensuring precise supply of fuel at all times. Piezo-injectors positioned in the combustion chambers between the valves ensure a smooth, efficient and clean combustion process. The engine fulfils the European EU5 standard as well as the ULEV II standards in the US.

Compared with the engine featured in the BMW X6 xDrive50i, this version has been modified in numerous respects to the specific requirements of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid. There is no starter, alternator, or belt drive for the air-conditioning compressor and hydraulic pump. The dual-circuit cooling system has been modified for all-electric operation.

Electric motors for enhanced performance on no extra fuel.
When accelerating, the V8 engine of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid joins forces with the electric motors to ensure optimum efficiency and dynamic performance. When the driver requires more power, the two electric motors supply additional torque for enhanced performance. This boost effect significantly increases the overall output of the vehicle, without increasing fuel consumption.

While the two electric motors have almost the same output, they have been modified in their performance characteristics to meet specific requirements. The power delivered is 91 hp and 86 hp, respectively, with peak torque values of 192 lb-ft and 206 lb-ft.

The electric motors support the combustion engine effectively throughout the entire speed range. The additional electrically-generated drive power reduces the power output required of the combustion engine when driving at steady highway speeds. Load shifts are managed to give the overall system enhanced efficiency under the full spectrum of driving conditions. During kick-down and maximum acceleration shifts, the electric motors help provide an additional boost of power.

Maximum system output is 480 hp, with peak torque of 575 lb-ft. This makes the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid the most powerful hybrid vehicle in the world, with acceleration from a standstill to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds and top speed is limited electronically to 130 mph.

All-electrical driving mode reducing emissions to zero.
With its combination of two-mode active transmission and high-performance battery pack, the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid is able to run on its electric motors alone at low speeds. This makes it a zero-emission vehicle under such conditions.

The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid may run on electric power alone regardless of the ambient temperature, as long as minimum operating temperatures are reached for the engine coolant, transmission fluid and high-voltage battery. Top speed in the electric mode is 37 mph, maximum range is 1.6 miles.

While driving electrically, the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid retains all its safety and comfort functions. The brakes remain fully operative thanks to electric vacuum supply, and don't require the combustion engine to develop their full effect. The same applies to the Electronic Power Steering, with steering assistance being generated on demand by an electric motor.

Even the air conditioning remains fully available without any restrictions, running efficiently on an electrically operated air-conditioning compressor. Since the battery pack supplies the electric power to the 12-volt on-board network through a voltage converter, all other systems such as the lights, infotainment, and safety systems remain fully functional.

Energy Regeneration: Electric power generated without additional fuel consumption.
The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid features an enhanced version of Brake Energy Regeneration already used in some current BMW models running on a combustion engine alone. In this case the electric motors act as generators when coasting or applying the brakes in order to feed electric power into the battery pack.

This process recaptures energy which would otherwise be lost in conventional vehicles in the form of heat escaping through the brakes. Depending on road speed, one or both of the electric motors may perform the regeneration function.

The power delivered by the generator is approximately 50 kW, about 25 times as much as the power provided by BMW's original Brake Energy Regeneration.

Generator delivering electrical braking force.
In the generator mode, the two electric motors recapture much of the energy that must be dissipated to slow the vehicle. The stopping force generated in this way is up to 0.3 G, significantly reducing the demands on the mechanical brake system.

Sensotronic Brake Actuation (SBA) in the BMW Active Hybrid X6 may be used at any time without a direct mechanical connection between the brake pedal and the hydraulic circuit. Pedal movement is recorded by sensors and split by a control unit into brake power generated by regeneration and conventional hydraulic braking. At the same time an integrated pedal force simulator generates the usual brake feeling for the driver as an additional factor in this brake-by-wire solution.

The active brake servo builds up brake pressure with electrical control according to the signals emitted by the control unit. To ensure brake power assistance also in the all-electric mode, the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid employs an electrical vacuum pump. A mechanical failsafe function guarantees full operation of the brake system in the event of a failure or a fault in the electrical system. In this case, the stopping power required is generated by the hydraulic system alone, like on a conventional vehicle.

The primary task of the SBA system is to maximize the use of brake force available through the regeneration process. Via the xDrive powertrain, the hybrid system in the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid is able to transmit regenerative brake forces to all four wheels. And whenever the stopping power required exceeds the level of 3 meters/sec, the control unit builds up additional brake force through the mechanical brake by means of the active brake servo.

In braking situations critical to driving stability, the control unit receives additional signals from Dynamic Stability Control, affecting brakes and engine management to keep the vehicle safely on course. This ensures safe braking under all conditions, regardless of whether the stopping power needed is generated electrically or hydraulically.

All driving stability systems are tailored to the dynamic character of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid. Dynamic Traction Control, for example, provides maximum traction and drive power on loose surfaces such as snow or sand thanks to its higher slip thresholds. And with the DTC mode activated, the driver may opt for a particularly sporting style of driving all the way to a controlled slip in corners.

BMW xDrive: intelligent all-wheel drive for extra performance, optimum driving stability and traction.
The sporty driving behavior of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid is due largely to BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Electronically controlled, variable distribution of drive power front-to-rear gives the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid superior traction and enhanced driving dynamics.

xDrive features smooth division of drive power through a transfer case with an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch that feeds power to the axle with optimum wheel contact and grip on the road. Under normal conditions BMW xDrive distributes drive power to the front and rear axle in a 40:60 split. Sensors constantly measure wheel slip at both the front and rear, and varies the balance of drive power within a fraction of a second. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, xDrive "looks ahead" and does not only respond when a wheel has already begun to spin.

Electronic Power Steering for even greater efficiency.
The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid is the first Sports Activity Vehicle to feature Electronic Power Steering. This allows variable steering assistance both when driving with the combustion engine and in the all-electric mode.

Electronic Power Steering on the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid comes complete with fully integrated speed-related Servotronic steering assistance. Servotronic reduces assistance at high speeds ensuring not only directional stability but also extremely precise steering behavior in corner. At low speeds, on the other hand, for example when parking, extra power assistance significantly reduces the steering forces required.

Liquid cooling for even greater performance on the high-performance battery pack.
The high-voltage, nickel-metal hydrid technology (NiMH) battery pack featured in the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid has a total capacity of 2.4 kWh, with 1.4 kWh available nominally. Maximum output is 57 kW, with the battery's control unit constantly determining the output level currently available as well as the charge status of the battery.

The high-performance battery pack comes with its own liquid cooling system incorporating a heat exchanger to cool the battery pack through the flow of air from the outside and, additionally, through a cooling circuit from the air conditioning system. These two circuits are activated either individually or in combination with one another, depending on need, with the control unit selecting the most effective and efficient cooling option as a function of ambient temperature and the temperature of the battery pack.

Cooling by the air conditioning system is activated by an appropriate switch valve, with the electrical climate compressor being switched on automatically whenever required. The battery cooling function is separate from the vehicle interior cooling function. Using the air conditioning system for battery pack cooling is far more efficient and effective than using air cooling alone to maintain the battery pack at the optimum operating temperature thereby preserving the hybrid functions longer in extreme weather and sport driving conditions. As befits The Ultimate Driving Machine, the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid provides a driving experience like no other hybrid in the marketplace.

Intelligent energy management and integral safety concept.
The electronics for BMW ActiveHybrid have been developed especially for energy efficiency and driving flexibility. The control system constantly controls the distribution of energy as a function of ambient conditions, the status of the vehicle, and the demands made by the driver. The two overriding control factors are the charge status of the battery pack and the capture of energy generated through regeneration.

The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid fulfills BMW's integral safety concepts that have been updated for hybrid vehicles. Examples of the features of this safety concept are the different colors of cables to avoid confusion, the presentation of clear safety warnings, and protection of the entire electrical system via extra-large insulation panels and newly developed connectors.

The high-voltage battery pack is housed in a reinforced steel casing and is located just above the rear axle at an extremely safe location in the event of a collision. The status of the battery pack is constantly supervised by integrated safety electronics, and the driver will be informed immediately of any malfunction and, if necessary, the entire system can be automatically discharged and deactivated. In the event of a crash, the system is switched off automatically within a fraction of a second. The central safety electronics then assess the severity of the accident and ensure a safe operating mode if possible.

Hybrid-specific Auto Start Stop function.
The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid is equipped with a new generation of Auto Start Stop technology, specifically tailored to the requirements of a hybrid vehicle. Auto Start Stop functions at all ambient temperatures. While the engine is switched off, the electric air-conditioning compressor automatically maintains the climate and temperature desired within the passenger compartment. All other electrically operated functions continue uninterrupted, with the on-board network supplied with power from the battery pack. The hybrid Auto Start Stop can be deactivated by choosing the Manual gearshift mode on the automatic transmission.

Displays inform the driver of the operating status and efficiency of the hybrid system.
Status of the hybrid system and current operating conditions are presented in two locations. The most important information is shown in the instrument cluster, separated according to operating mode. Further information and technical explanations are shown in the Central Display.

The drive displays are split into a conventional tachometer for the combustion engine and electric drive display in the lower part of the instrument cluster. The electric drive display shows the charge status of the battery pack, the regeneration status, and the electric motor operating status. In the Central Display, this information is supplemented by additional data on current operating conditions and the current flow of energy.

Specific set-up of the suspension and the lightweight brakes.
The chassis and suspension of the BMW Active Hybrid X6 is largely the same as the technology already featured on the BMW X6 xDrive50i. The front suspension is a double A-arm configuration ensuring excellent driving dynamics, comfort, and directional stability. Self-leveling with air suspension provides a constant ride height, even when carrying a heavy load.

Lightweight brakes decelerate the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid by means of aluminum floating calipers and brake rotors incorporating aluminum hubs (or hats). Lightweight materials engineering reduces unsprung mass and improves the vehicle's driving comfort and agility. Brake disc diameter is 15.2 inches up front and 13.6 inches at the rear.

20-inch light-alloy Aero wheels featuring an aerodynamically optimized design have been developed exclusively for the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid. 19-inch light-alloy wheels with all-season tires are available as an option. In each case the tires feature runflat technology which enables the driver to continue driving after a complete loss of pressure.

Bodyshell and safety: intelligent lightweight construction, optimized occupant safety.
Intelligent lightweight construction and a special body structure for maximum rigidity also characterize the unibody of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid.

The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid comes with three-point inertia-reel seat belts for all seats featuring belt force limiters and belt pretensioners on the front seats. To protect the occupants from cervical spine injury in the event of a collision at the rear, the front seats feature crash-activated headrests, the rear seats come as standard with ISOFIX child seat fastenings. The vehicle is equipped with frontal and hip thorax airbags, and side-curtain head airbags.

All restraint systems are controlled by central safety electronics including rollover sensors. The system can activate the side-curtain airbags and belt pretensioners in the event of an impending rollover.

Standard adaptive bi-xenon headlights ensure optimum illumination of the road ahead by steering with the vehicle. A daytime running light function operates through the corona rings. The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid also features a windshield-mounted sensor that automatically controls the lights and windshield wipers on demand. Additional comfort at night is provided by available Automatic High Beams which will automatically dim the high beam headlights when an oncoming vehicle is detected. The standard Head-Up Display projects information relevant to the driver onto the windscreen.

The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid: Sports Activity Coupe of the highest standard, BMW ActiveHybrid with maximum efficiency.
The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid combines an innovative vehicle concept with cutting-edge drivetrain technology to provide a truly unique driving experience. The enhancement of both dynamic performance and efficiency gives BMW's Sports Activity Coupe additional appeal. BMW ActiveHybrid technology helps to achieve a high level of efficiency in this versatile model.

From outside the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid differs from the conventional-drivetrain models in only a few details. With its elegant and dynamically flowing roofline and features typical of a BMW, the Sports Activity Coupe offers a uniquely sporting rendition of this very special vehicle with its unprecedented character, now as a full hybrid variant.

The "powerdome" hood distinguishes the vehicle from outside, "ActiveHybrid" model designations on the tailgate trim bar and the front doors as well as Bluewater Metallic paint offered for the first time on a BMW X6. Apart from the specific hybrid displays in the instrument cluster, door entry trim covers bearing the designation "BMW ActiveHybrid" on the driver's and front passenger's doors add a particular highlight and sign of distinction.
